Custom Range Hood Ideas: Wood Hood Designs That Anchor a Luxury Kitchen

0

A custom range hood is often the first thing people notice in a kitchen, mostly because of where it is. It sits above the cooktop, in the middle of the main wall, right where the eye goes. That position makes it a good place for a bit of design, and wood or plaster hoods have become a common way to do it in higher-end kitchens.

There’s a wide range of shapes. Tall, tapered hoods feel traditional and a little grand. Simple box hoods look clean and modern. Curved bases, crown molding and decorative straps push the look back toward classic. Some homeowners paint the hood the same color as the walls so it blends in, and others want stained wood so it stands out.

Looks are only part of it, though. Inside every decorative hood there’s a ventilation insert doing the real work of pulling smoke, heat, and grease out of the room. That insert has to suit the size and output of the cooktop underneath it, and the duct run has to be planned properly. A good-looking hood that doesn’t vent well just leaves a smoky kitchen.

Size and height affect both how the hood works and how it looks. Most are at least as wide as the cooktop, and many are a few inches wider. Mounting height is a balance between capturing smoke and keeping sightlines open, and the manufacturer of the insert usually gives a recommended range.

Kitchens tend to look best when the hood and the cabinets are designed together, so the trim, color, and proportions match. Planning it late usually means compromises.
